SAS Nagar: 7th March 2024: (Kartika Kalyani Singh-Media Link//Mohali Screen Desk)::

This is from a time when education was less and technical facilities were also less, so disputes were resolved on the basis of Panchayat. A concept was born from the same justice system so that people could be given a process of getting justice which was both accessible and easy. The embodiment of the same concept is today called Lok Adalat with great love and respect.

This history of Lok Adalat in its latest form is not very old. As part of these efforts to make justice fast and affordable, the first Lok Adalat was organized on 14 March 1982 in Junagadh, Gujarat. Soon after, Maharashtra introduced Lok Nyayalaya in 1984. This process gained some momentum and the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 also provided statutory status to Lok Adalats.

Due to this, according to the constitutional mandate in Article 39-A of the Constitution of India. It also constituted the Legal Services Authority to provide free and competent legal services. Its popularity also started increasing rapidly. The weaker sections of the society also started understanding its benefits.

Many dispute cases started reaching Lok Adalats. Most of these cases are motor accident claim cases, matrimonial/family disputes, labor disputes, disputes related to public services like telephone, electricity, bank recovery cases, land acquisition disputes.

At Sessions Division, SAS Nagar, Rashtriya Lok Adalat will be held on 09th March 2024 under the leadership of Shri. Harpal Singh, District and Sessions Judge, in which 9613 cases including 4092 pre-litigative and 5521 pending cases will be heard by 20 benches. 12 Lok Adalat benches at SAS Nagar, the district headquarters, will function to adjudicate the cases, while 4 benches at Kharar and 04 benches at Dera Bassi will function to adjudicate the cases.

Criminal compoundable offences, NI Act cases under Section 138, Bank recovery cases, MACT cases, matrimonial disputes, labor disputes, land acquisition cases, electricity and water bills (except non-compoundable theft cases), salaries And service matters relating to allowances and retirement benefits, revenue matters and other civil matters (rent, easement rights, injunction suits, specific performance suits) etc. will be considered for settlement between the parties.

Ms. Surbhi Parashar, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, SAS Nagar urged the public to settle their cases through Lok Adalat for win-win situation for both parties.

He further revealed that the decision of the case settled in Lok Adalat will be final and there will be no appeal or revision against it. On disposal of their case in Lok Adalat, the parties are refunded the court fees incurred by them.
